Our Focus on Responsible Tourism and Community-based Experiences
Community-Based Tourism
Community-based tourism (CBT) is a form of responsible tourism that offers travellers an authentic experience while supporting local economies and cultures. CBT involves working directly with local communities to develop tourism initiatives that may include promoting traditional arts and crafts, sourcing local foods, offering cultural tours, and providing community-owned accommodation.
This roadshow will highlight innovative new CBT initiatives from Uganda and Ethiopia, designed to enrich your travel packages by offering your clients deeper, more meaningful experiences — while directly contributing to sustainable development and local livelihoods.
Responsible Tourism
The participating inbound tour operators from Uganda and Ethiopia have demonstrated a strong commitment to responsible tourism through their engagement with the Travelife certification programme.
Many have achieved Travelife Partner or Travelife Certified status, recognising their advanced sustainability efforts. Others hold Travelife Engaged status, marking the beginning of their journey toward higher certification.
Beyond certification
We approach responsible tourism through the way trips are designed, how they’re operated, and who they benefit. It means working with local suppliers who care about people and the planet, and ensuring that travel brings real value to communities. In Africa, it’s also about looking beyond the predictable safari circuit — discovering local cultures, hidden places, and more thoughtful ways to explore.
Travelife is a leading global initiative for training, management, and certification in responsible tourism. It supports tourism businesses in applying best practices and reaching their sustainability goals. Learn more at www.travelife.info.
